Travel Tips from Someone Who Got a Second Chance at Life
Hey there, fellow traveler!
If you're reading this, I want to remind you that life is a gift—and so is every journey you take. After surviving a stroke and being given a second chance at life, I made a decision: I would see the world, embrace new experiences, and live fully. If you've been given a second chance, too, I hope you do the same.
Whether you're booking your first big trip or you're a seasoned traveler, here are some things I’ve learned along the way.
1. Travel with Purpose
Don’t just go somewhere because it’s trendy—go where your soul feels called. Maybe it’s a place that brings you peace, a destination you’ve always dreamed of, or somewhere that challenges you in a good way. Every trip is an opportunity to grow.
2. Pack Light, but Pack Smart
I used to overpack like I was moving to a new country, but I’ve learned that less is more. Bring the essentials, wear comfortable shoes, and don’t forget a small first-aid kit (trust me, a blister from walking too much is no joke).
3. Stay Healthy While You Explore
Taking care of yourself while traveling is a must. Drink water, stretch after long flights, and listen to your body. If you take medications, set reminders so you don’t miss a dose. Your health is your greatest asset—treat it that way.
4. Embrace the Unexpected
Not everything will go as planned—and that’s okay! Some of my best travel memories came from detours, delays, or simply saying “yes” to something spontaneous. Leave room for adventure.
5. Be Present, Not Just a Photographer
Take the pictures, capture the moments—but don’t forget to live them, too. Some of my favorite memories aren’t in my camera roll; they’re in my heart.
6. Choose Experiences Over Things
A designer handbag won’t change your life, but seeing the Eiffel Tower sparkle at night just might. Invest in experiences that make you feel alive.
7. Safety First, Always
Trust your instincts. Keep your passport and important documents in a safe place. Be aware of your surroundings. And if something doesn’t feel right, walk away.
8. Connect with People
The world is full of beautiful souls. Talk to locals, learn a few words in their language, and don’t be afraid to make connections. Some of my favorite travel stories come from the people I’ve met along the way.
9. Give Yourself Grace
Travel isn’t about perfection—it’s about experiencing life. If you get lost, laugh it off. If you miss a train, enjoy the extra time. If things don’t go as planned, remember: you’re still out here living.
10. Make Every Trip Count
I don’t just travel for fun—I travel because I’ve been given another chance to see, feel, and embrace the world. If you’ve been given that chance, too, don’t waste it. Go where your heart leads you. Take the trip. Create the memories. Live the life you were meant to.
